Lucas Strzelec https://lucasstrzelec.com/DIY-Dublin Fall 2020 Design Excellence Nominee Dublin has been particularly affected by the global housing crisis that has seen city centers become unaffordable for residents, social housing neglected, and a huge rise in homelessness. Currently, there are 30,000 people on the waiting list for social housing in Dublin. For the most part, solutions for affordable housing have involved large scale relocation of people to peripheral urban areas. This project questions the current actions of the government, which have largely been the demolition of the present urban fabric; a plan of tabula rasa, while pushing and pricing people out of their own neighborhoods. I have identified nearly 12 acres of government held, misused property. These properties are typically unique and complex interstitial pockets that have resulted from different generations of urban development, which introduce new challenges and make them more easily dismissed, often sold as a smaller part of a demolition plan for redevelopment. If used differently, these potential sites in this area could accommodate 1,500 units, which by percentage of area and population, is more than adequate to respond to the current need. This plan works as an organizing system that gives the individual agency in their own living space. The system allows for multiple uses and variations. It utilizes a central core that houses all utilities and can be occupied in whatever way suits the occupants. It allows flexibility and relates to the existing context and urban fabric. Lucas Strzelec https://lucasstrzelec.com/Torre-Mexico-City Spring 2020 Design Excellence NomineeW// Maarten Janssens Torre is a conceptual residential high rise developed after a trip to Mexico City, where upon returning home we were immediately put into self isolation due to the Covid Pandemic. It is an exploration of the experiences and diverse conditions we admired in Mexico City, a collaborative project focused on the architectural plan. We created a neutral frame, built out from the geometries of an abandoned warehouse block, to fill with these established diverse conditions. We tried as many conditions as we could go through, theorizing that individuals living in this “exquisite corpse” would potentially design and build each floor to whatever situations they needed. Starting with a list of architectural situations and 35mm photographs we took on our trip, we experimented and explored these theories through an architectural language. Sometimes one partner would start a plan and the other would finish; sometimes one partner would take up half of a floor and identify where the other could begin with their interpretation of a theory (or a symbiotic theory), implying a reaction to what had already been designed; and sometimes a mixed authorship would evolve from one partner responding to continuous on-screen annotation by the other. Occasionally the plans were playful, other times the plans were serious, speaking to our dynamic reactions to the situation. The result is an exploration of isolated collaboration, a building that is grounded by our experiences in Mexico City, and elevated by our desire to find again the energy of studio through a remote Nearly 2,500 schools were damaged or destroyed. In April of 2017, using a participatory approach with the community and local architect, we designed, a Temporary Learning Center in Huamba Baja, Ancash Region, Peru. I project managed and led construction for the TLC using only locally sourced building materials from the community in order to involve those affected by the disaster in construction and future maintenance. The challenge was to construct a permanent school quickly using unskilled labor. Alongside structural engineer Oluwaseun Okusanya, this earthquake- and flood- resistant school was approved by the regional government in August. The building comprises two modules of three and two classrooms, which can be easily replicated. The structure is raised on 36 6”x 6” stilted columns bolted to isolated concrete pads. The school was completed in October and two more schools were built in neighboring communities. Hurricane Maria landed on the independent island of Dominica at 9:35pm on September 18th with winds up to 160 mph and higher gusts. 80% of the population was directly affected and 90% of roofs were damaged or destroyed. An initial response team arrived in the country 3 months after the disaster and through a series of assessments with the Ministry of Education began working on the Paix Bouche Primary School in the north. Paix Bouche is 21 miles north of the capital of Roseau. The town is situated on top and within a valley leading to the western Caribbean sea. The school’s roof was completely destroyed rendering it’s effectiveness as a hurricane shelter useless. The majority of the windows and hurricane shutters were torn from the building. Paix Bouche lost both it’s sole primary school and hurricane shelter. With the help of engineer Oluwaseun Okunsanya, Wynyard Esprit, and Engineers without Borders, we designed a new roof, replaced all of the hollow CMU blocks with reinforced CMU, redesigned windows, doors, and redesigned a new first floor layout. The buildings columns and beams were the only things that remained of the original building. It is now recognized as a hurricane shelter and got students back to school in September just for the start of the new year. We fully renovated the adjacent stage and bathroom block. As well as assessing other schools in the area, I managed the project during construction working closely with the Ministry of Education and Engineers without Borders throughout the project.&nbsp; Tue, 25 May 2021 17:07:59 +0000 Lucas Strzelec https://lucasstrzelec.com/Kindergarten-Rehabilitation-Santa-Cruz-de-la-Sierra Finalist ARCH Sharing Competition Kindergarted Rehabilitation in Bolivia &nbsp;This plan proposes a new and strategic use of space that intentionally separates preschool, primary school and community while integrating the three by means of a central hall and community kitchen. This accessible, multifunctional community space is activated by the large open green space and kitchen, shared by school and community, and serves as a central, safe meeting point for drop off and pick up of the preschool children. The community space is easily accessible and open, while the preschool and primary school are enclosed with restricted access. With more than 500 children that could benefit from the re-opening of the preschool, my intention is to maximize the existing footprint of the 8,000 sq ft court. By creating a grid of cables hanging from the existing trusses, lightweight, local materials can be wrapped and hung, engaging a different scale, without the need for highly skilled labor. Three existing classrooms that appear structurally compromised will be demolished and used as fill for two large gabion basket partitions and for drainage around the court.
